Our empirical research (currently under review) has taken a feature-based, data-driven approach to decompose the vague concept of humanlike appearance. Based on a systematic analysis of 251 real-world robots in the ABOT Collection, we have found that looking "humanlike" is far from a unitary construct; instead, humanlike appearance has three distinct dimensions—Body-Manipulators, Face, and Surface—each consisting of a unique constellation of human appearance features.
Click below to explore the three-dimensional space of humanlike appearance. This interactive 3D scatter plot contains all 251 robots currently in the ABOT collection.
